Independent Domestic Violence Advisor (IDVA)

About the Role

We are looking for a Qualified Independent Domestic Violence Advisor (IDVA) to provide high-quality, trauma-informed support to victims and survivors of domestic abuse.

You will manage a caseload of complex cases, assess risk, develop safety plans and provide independent advocacy to help victims access the right services and stay safe. You will work across statutory and community settings, supporting victims through criminal, civil and family justice processes.

The role will also contribute to the development and delivery of the Barnet Domestic Abuse Support Hub (BDASH)and the wider Domestic Abuse and VAWG Strategy.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide trauma-informed, victim-centred support to survivors of domestic abuse.

• Complete DASH risk assessments, safety planning and ongoing risk reviews.

• Develop and deliver tailored intervention and support plans.

• Provide advocacy and support through criminal, civil and family court processes.

• Support access to safe accommodation, legal advice, health services and other specialist support.

• Undertake proactive casework, including community/home visits and assertive outreach.

• Work with victims experiencing complex needs and high levels of risk.

• Attend and contribute to MARAC, MAPPA, safeguarding, CIN and CP meetings.

• Work closely with police, social care, housing, health, education and voluntary-sector partners.

• Advocate for victims and ensure their voices are heard throughout the support process.

• Maintain accurate, confidential and GDPR-compliant case records.

• Prepare clear written and verbal reports based on complex information.

• Contribute to service development, VAWG forums and domestic abuse partnership initiatives.

• Deliver domestic abuse awareness and training to colleagues and partner agencies where required.

Essential Requirements

✅ Level 3 regulated IDVA qualification or equivalent recognised qualification, such as SafeLives IDVA training.

✅ Minimum 2 years' post-qualification experience supporting victims/survivors of domestic abuse.

✅ Enhanced DBS with a satisfactory outcome.

You should have strong knowledge of:

• Domestic Abuse Act 2021 and relevant safeguarding legislation.

• Children Act 1989 and Care Act 2014.

• DASH risk assessment and safety planning.

• MARAC and multi-agency safeguarding processes.

• Criminal, civil and family justice systems.

• Protective orders and special measures.

• Trauma-informed and strengths-based practice.

• The diverse and intersectional needs of victims and survivors.

What We’re Looking For

We are looking for an experienced IDVA who can confidently manage complex cases, work independently and collaborate effectively with partner agencies. You should be an excellent communicator with strong advocacy, risk assessment, safeguarding and case management skills.
